On the Friday immediately before the famous 24–hour race I am normally to be found hot–footing it down the Autoroute from Calais to Le Mans. Not this year.
So, to all those subscribers blearily opening the newsletter on a BlackBerry or iPhone in France, I wish you all the best and I am sure you will enjoy every minute of arguably the most testing race in the world.
At least I'll be spared the trouble of working out the precise physics behind the astonishingly fast Audi R18 e–tron quattro, the pole–sitting car that could well be first across the line at three o'clock on Sunday.
And speaking of fast Audis, the latest RS4 has hit the streets and we've driven it. What price on the next generation of fast Audis having the e–tron quattro's technology?
It's all a far cry from 1959 and Aston Martin's one–and–only victory at La Sarthe, celebrated in a short film in tribute to Roy Salvadori, Carroll Shelby and Ted Cutting, the drivers and designer of the winning Aston Martin DBR1.
Or is it? World–class drivers, state–of–the–art cars and 24 long hours to prove who's best. Some things never change.

DRIVING REPORT
Audi RS4 Avant
This could go one of two ways, writes John Simister. Audi's previous–generation RS4, all 4.2 litres and 420bhp of it, was an absolute cracker of a car — but then came the RS5. It was not nice at all.

MOTORCYCLES
Short Film: Modern Motor Cycle Company
Many believe the mid-20th Century was the golden era of the motor car; Christian Condo believes the same of its two–wheeled counterpart. He describes the motorcycle as "reliable and functional, but still humble and elegant", and the company he founded recaptures this notion both in its motorcycles, and in this short film. read more...
