As we are on the eve of HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, I somehow feel commanded to reflect on the occasion, and throw a bit of car stuff in along the way.
The last time I tried this — and was less then respectful of Lanchesters, Daimlers and their ilk — I got a bit of a stinging email. Not from the Royal Household, you understand, but from someone who is now probably an ex–reader.
So, treading carefully, can I simply wish Her Majesty all the very best and look forward to September when the automotive world pays its dues to her six–decade reign with the Windsor Castle Concours d'Elegance.
This coming Sunday we'll be enjoying the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, a flotilla of some 1000 boats travelling from Chelsea to Tower Bridge.
The Windsor event won't match that, but 60 cars for 60 years is not bad going and there will be an associated Jubilee Tour of Elegance with another five dozen making their way from Central London to Windsor Castle on Sunday, 9 September.
It should be quite a sight — although standing on the riverbank with a pint will always beat braving it out, Thermos in hand, by the side of the A4.
