EDITORIAL

It's only right and proper to say a few words about the passing of the great Carroll Shelby.

I'll leave it to those who knew Shelby from his early days, racing imported exotics as a 'hired gun' in the best Texan tradition, to really talk about 'the man'.

I did meet him, briefly, a few years ago at Le Mans, revisiting the scene of his greatest triumph at the wheel: winning, in 1959, the famous 24–hour race in an Aston Martin DBR1. But it's for creating the Cobra, and being such a key part of the whole Ford Motor Company Total Performance programme in the 60s, that Shelby must be remembered and revered.

Without the simple–but–effective Cobras, Ferrari might not have been spurred on to build exotics such as the GTO 64 and 250 LM. And Shelby's involvement in the Ford GT programme meant prolonging the 'Cobra–Ferrari wars' by proxy, well into the late–1960s.

Even by then — much simpler days as we look back on them now — the bean–counters were running the show, and the memory of first lowering a 260 c.i. Ford V8 into a freshly delivered, unpainted chassis from AC Cars must have been a distant one.

Like Enzo Ferrari, Sir William Lyons and Colin Chapman, he was truly one of the greats. It's too simplistic to say, "We'll never see their like again." Of course we will.

But the chances of a budding Carroll Shelby making it in today's automotive environment are as slim as the stripes on his famous racing bib–and–brace overalls.
