EDITORIAL

I have finally got round to watching 'Senna'. What a fabulous film. I was expecting the usual sequence of, "I remember when..." and, "He was so good, he could..."

No, under Asif Kapadia's sensitively skilled direction, the film — very often in Portuguese with English subtitles — tells the story leading up to that terrible day in May 1994 in almost unrelated, bite-sized chunks. Whole years are omitted, yet the inevitable end–of–season clashes are played out in detail with much footage that has rarely — if ever — been seen before.

As with the very best films, even though you know what's going to happen, the final scenes still hold the viewer on the edge of their seat. The representation of a clearly troubled Brazilian champion at Imola is inspired. As another reviewer put it, "We're not so much hearing what happened in the past as seeing it happen before our eyes."

Not a 'motor racing film' in any way, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
