EDITORIAL

Here's one for you: famous ownership. At what level of 'celebrity' does the previous owner of a car matter?

Naturally, the very 250F that Juan Manuel Fangio drove to win the 1957 German Grand Prix is not just any old Maserati. Meanwhile, a modern supercar owned by a current sporting or show–business personality is really just a daily driver, with little of the emotional attraction of an earlier age when such cars were so much rarer.

The reason I mention this is the news that Bonhams will offer a 1974 Rolls–Royce Silver Shadow owned from new by Andy Warhol until his death in 1987. I'm not sure which camp this falls into — it's a nice enough old thing, in 1970s two–tone brown, but not especially desirable.

Add the Warhol connection — and I think the Rolls was the perfect car for him — and it does become interesting.

And who knows, a bit of scrabbling around under the seats might produce a sketch on the back of an envelope. Or that mysterious 'thunk' from the trunk could be an errant can of Campbell's tomato soup.
