Our latest feature on this year's Monterey week, an overview of The Quail, has led me to consider what constitutes good taste, and whether very personal commissions age well, over time.
The successful 1970s grocery magnate, with his peacock blue Corniche proudly carrying a solid–gold sausage in place of the Flying Lady, might have to wait a century or so for respect in the car–collecting community. On the other hand, the 'Maharaja cars' of the '20s and '30s — once considered somewhat outré — now enjoy a justly deserved following.
So how will the world judge the latest delivery to American bedding magnate Michael Fux: a Phantom Drophead Coupé with purple paint and white leather interior, a combination surely last seen piled high, pre–Christmas, at Toys R Us?
Good for him, I say. The Bespoke department at the Goodwood–based company is roaring busy right now, with work coming in from far and wide. And the colour issue does not stop at some of these wilder concoctions. How many times did I hear "Pity it's red..." last week, when discussing a road–going Ferrari GT?
Life would be much less interesting if everyone ordered grey or dark blue Ferraris or Astons. Well, a bit less.
