Classic Inside 27/2011

EDITORIAL

As ever with the Goodwood Festival, you get out of it as much as you put in. It's an exercise in observation. While last year I marvelled at the drilling on the key in the Porsche 908/3 and the gargantuan Avro Vulcan, in 2011 my attention was drawn to a little bit of embossed plastic on the dash of a mid–70s Indianapolis McLaren.

It was a simple set–up: rev–counter and two or three ancillary gauges, with a wood–handled gearlever sitting comfortably to hand. You could forgive the furry wiring and sizeable length of untrimmed brackets, but what did make me smile was the Dymo–ed 'Oil' on the glass of what was clearly originally a water temperature gauge.

Whether it was over–ordering at the factory ("you haven't had that Smiths rep in again, have you? I've told you about him...") or simply race day expedience, we will never know.

It does show, however, how things used to be done, and how much more professional teams are nowadays.

It also demonstrates the sheer variety of the Festival of Speed, and the opportunity of noticing such tiny threads in motor racing's rich tapestry.
