I can only assume that it has been 'lost in the post', but my customary invitation to attend the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy hasn't turned up this year. Which is a shame, on two fronts.
First of all, it's an interesting, mind–expanding event with some sublime pieces of art mixed in with the frankly barmy. Secondly, it has parallels with the automotive world of concours and club meetings ("...some sublime pieces mixed in with the frankly barmy").
As a snapshot of contemporary art, however, it differs from most concours d'elegance by only selecting pieces created in the last two years or so. Otherwise, one assumes, Stubbs would be sharing wall–space with Emin and Koons.
So, cerebral idea for the weekend, is there room in the automotive calendar for an 'exhibition' — note, no manufacturer branding or motor show hard–sell — of the best of modern car design and nothing else, much in the manner of the original, 1930s Villa d'Este?
