Once again, I have to applaud Motor Sport magazine, in association with TAG Heuer, for its annual 'Hall of Fame' awards, held in London's Roundhouse this week.
The well–deserved inductees were Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Frank Williams, Jody Scheckter and Dario Franchitti. You couldn't ask for a better dialogue between those present receiving their awards and a British motor racing 'Royal Family' that included John Watson, Sir Stirling Moss and Murray Walker.
The following day I took an impromptu coffee with Jaguar privateer, and works Lister driver, Peter Blond. In fine form, and still working for Sotheby's Realty, Blond was generous with his self–effacing stories of motor racing, 1950s–style.
My favourite was his only ever 'team instruction' at Le Mans, in 1959, I think.
Instead of a decisive "hold station with the Ferraris", or " there's oil at White House", co–driver Ivor Bueb had politely asked him if he "would go upstairs and put a tie on".
Priceless, and worthy of a 'Classic Driver' award any day of the week.
