Just to vary things, in addition to attending classic car auctions, I've been to a couple of collectors' watch sales in the last few weeks. The two enthusiasms go together very well, and the West End sale yesterday produced a friendly face or two from the London car scene.
The packed saleroom — for a collection of watches seized by, and sold on behalf of a government agency — had been enticed by the prospect of 'gold standard' entries, all at No Reserve and attractively estimated.
As is so often the case, things didn't work out quite like that. Once bidding was underway the estimates, by and large, were doubled (and please don't even mention the buyer's premium — considerably more than in the automotive world). There were many identical lots — all unused, strapless — and one trade buyer was clearly replenishing his stock, as he must have bought at least a third of them.
The cat–and–mouse game of bidding was, as ever, an interesting one. As most of the pieces were identical, the tension as the very last pieces came under the hammer was palpable. "I've really got to get this one..." I am sure you know the feeling.
Unlike a successful Pebble Beach sale, however, our trading friend could pop his 50–or–so purchases into a briefcase, rather than a fleet of Peterbilt trailers.
