Classic Inside 39/2010

EDITORIAL

“How fast does it go?” is the sort of question you hear from adolescent petrolheads – not genuine supercar buyers. So I was a bit surprised to hear Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann claim that top speed is no longer the number one priority. Was it ever?

Even acceleration is pretty irrelevant, when it comes down to shaving a further tenth of a second off an already sub-four-second 0-62mph sprint. If we must talk figures, then 80-180mph is the exciting bit, but the real pleasure comes not from the numbers but from the ultra-smooth delivery of phenomenal torque, the reassuring feel of lithe, supple suspension, a perfect dynamic balance, and so on.

Nevertheless, I can’t fault Lamborghini’s weight-saving philosophy when it comes to its startling new Sesto Elemento concept car, unveiled in Paris this week. Because everything – from flat-out acceleration to handling, braking, fuel economy, you name it – will benefit hugely from a supercar that weighs less than a tonne. And the Sesto Elemento manages it (just), despite a 570HP V10 engine and four-wheel drive.

And in total contradiction to everything I’ve said above, did you see that the 0-62mph time is just 2.5 seconds? Two point five seconds!
