Classic Inside 26/2010

EDITORIAL

If you gave a chimpanzee a pile of coat–hangers, it's unlikely that it would come up with a 2.5–metre tall sculpture of a gorilla.

Man, on the other hand, in the form of artist David Mach, has transformed I–don't–know–how–many of the curly throwaways into just that. Titled 'Silver Streak', it's one of the leading works at this year's Summer Exhibition and, for a price of £265,000, it could be snagging cardies in your hall this Christmas.

It is brilliantly done. As was another sculpture, made of aged oak with the most perfect surface pattern. Now I'll allow the world's automotive safety legislators their say on the coat–hanger issue, but why can't we have the option of fabulous textures such as real, distressed and aged wood on the dash of modern cars?

It would, apparently, "never pass the tests", according to one leading designer I spoke to while at Le Mans last month. Which is a pity, because if, say, you could allow people to express themselves in the wackiest way at least on small city cars (Smart, new Gordon Murray, etc.), it would make up for further restrictions in everyday motoring pleasure long–term.

Splintering oak at 170mph is one thing, but at 15mph in urban traffic?
