Classic Inside 23/2010

EDITORIAL

Motoring journalists can sometimes grow blasé about the cars they drive and the people they're privileged to meet. Yet even the most hardened hack will retain his own, personal heroes who cause him to lower his gaze, shuffle his feet, and go pink around the ears.

Now, I wouldn't for a moment suggest that Editor Wakefield would display such schoolboy–esque behaviour: but let me say that he was, to say the least, fairly chirpy around the office when he arranged a one–to–one interview with Sir Jackie Stewart. (It was quite touching, actually.)

And who can blame him? The chance to ask the triple World Champion about his new 'scrapbook' and lifetime in motorsport — including a first–hand account of the ambulance driver getting lost en route to the hospital after that dreadful accident at Spa — is pretty heady stuff for someone with a real passion for the sport. The day we cease to be excited about such opportunities is the day we should start a new career. And, as you can tell, I'm really rather jealous about the whole thing.

The result is a discussion of 'Collage, Jackie Stewart's Grand Prix Album' in this week's Classic Inside, to be followed next week by a more in–depth interview, including JYS's own account of the 'comedy of errors' that was the result of that incident at Spa.

Plus we'll be bringing you some tales from Le Mans 2010, where the world's greatest endurance race will be starting in, ooh, a little less than 30 hours' time.
