Classic Inside 20/2010

EDITORIAL

There's a sporty slant to this week's newsletter including, as it does, a report on the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the Mille Miglia Storica. Two events, both won by a BMW; an interesting coincidence.

Over dinner the other night, talk turned to race-driving styles. The famous Eifel circuit rewards precision, yet there are some cars — as countless YouTube videos show — that even in professional hands need to be 'monstered' round to produce a decent time.

Give a young DTM driver the keys to a high–performance road car and he could shred the tyres in a lap or so. Doubtless, he would be very quick.

Entrust the same car to a wily pro such as Walter Röhrl and the bobbles will still be on the rubber even after a sub–record lap. It's a matter of style and application.

From the spectators' standpoint, who is the most entertaining? As long as the racing is close, I'm satisfied with both and can as happily watch smoothest–of–the–smooth Richard Attwood, as I could the late, great Gerry Marshall when in flamboyant mood.
