Do you like Marmite? For non–UK readers, I'm referring to the dark, sticky yeast extract popular as a sandwich spread for more than 100 years.
Opinions on its qualities vary. For some, it's a useful kick–start to the working day on hot, buttered toast, or comfort food at night–time. Others would compare its consistency, appearance and salty taste to the tar–like discharges presently flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.
It's a 'love it or hate it' thing, with the description 'like Marmite' signifying an object that sharply divides opinion.
The reason I'm raising this right now is that the subject of 'Chinese Eye' Rolls and Bentleys came up at last weekend's excellent Frank Dale & Stepsons Open Day. The beetle–browed coupés and convertibles do, apparently, fall into the Marmite category. I was surprised — I really like them (David Hemmings in Blow Up, anyone?).
Just a few feet away from the black 1965 Silver Cloud III Coupé by Mulliner Park Ward stood a Hooper–bodied S2 Continental. Now, this is the 600g catering tub but... in a certain light... and at a particular angle...
What do you think, and can you come up with others? The back–catalogue of Hooper and Zagato will supply some gems and even Pininfarina and Touring go a little off–piste on occasion. Over to you.
