After exhaustive research (okay, five minutes of haphazard Googling), I've yet to locate a car called a 'Volcano'. Unless it translates into something unmentionable in Ulan Bator, the manufacturers have missed a trick here.
The word has been on everyone's lips over the past week and, surely, the image of unimagined power, moving earth and crushing everything before it is an evocative one. I suppose they might be a bit uncontrollable but, hey, what's ABS and ESC for?
We've had Hurricanes, Typhoons, Tempests and Tornadoes, not to mention Cobras, Vipers and all manner of Spiders — none of which are known for their benefit to mankind. There are, I grant you, smoke and dust issues — surely nothing a decent catalyst couldn't sort out.
The Icelandic eruptions of recent days have caused us all a bit of bother, to say the least. Leading participants in the Tour Auto were held up due to travel problems. Arrangements for next weekend's Monaco Historics and attendant top–level car auctions have been made considerably more difficult, with cars, drivers, bidders and catalogue deliveries at the mercy of air traffic control and a plume of smoke just over the horizon.
Hopefully, things will have settled down by then, as I will be in Monaco for the long weekend of racetrack and saleroom activity.
Until then, enjoy this week's Classic Driver newsletter and you decide who's correct: should it be 'Shooting Brake' or 'Shooting Break'? It'll give you something to do at the airport.
