Classic Inside 15/2010

EDITORIAL

The United Kingdom is in the grip of election fever. While the strict definition of fever might be 'an extreme state of excitement, or nervousness', I think the image of a patient teetering on the edge of life and death, drifting in and out of consciousness might be more apt, as we seem to have been on an election footing for the last three or four years.

Leaving specific politics (quite correctly) aside, is there anything we can draw from the parties' manifestos? Not really. As in any developed country, the average motorist is going to get beaten with a big stick – it's just a matter of how many knobbly bits are attached to the end of it or, in the UK, whether it's wrapped in 'hard–working' hessian or blue–blooded bridle leather.

Mulling over cars and politics, I am reminded of the famous 'Dan Gurney for President' bumper stickers and badges of the 60s. This was a campaign promoted by the US magazine Car and Driver in 1964 to "...run our own candidate, a man who can represent each of us who counts himself a car nut."

Who could fill that position today? Who would your candidate be for 'this Great and Honored Post'? Sir Stirling Moss would get my vote.
