Classic Inside 13/2010

EDITORIAL

I am writing this post–midday, comfortably outside the pressures of running an April Fool's Day story. So, what's really happening this week?

Well, the manufacturers are having a lie–down after Geneva but there are more press launches scheduled for later this month (we will, for example, be driving the Bentley Mulsanne and Audi RS5). Meanwhile, just a week or so separates us from the start of a hectic event calendar, culminating in the Goodwood Revival this September.

The auction scene is hotting up, too. By the end of the May Monaco sales, many millions of euros will have changed hands and new owners will be looking forward to a summer of motoring in their latest pride and joys. You can read my impressions of one of the forthcoming auction entries this week, the 1938 Delahaye.

I had some fun in it. Coming to grips with a pre–selector gearbox was one of the highlights and I'd like to make it quite clear to my driving instructor that I was not frightened of the new technology; merely 'running myself in' gently. If you can call something from 70+ years ago 'new'.

Whatever, for an archetypal concours d'elegance car it was very pleasant to drive and I trust that subsequent owners will — should they gain an entry — enjoy the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance as much as the great Sunday concours on the lawn itself.
