EDITORIAL

Brrr... it's a bit chilly here right now. The United Kingdom is suffering from one of its occasional deep freezes, with most of the country under several inches of snow.

Of the brave souls that do venture onto the highways, the TV pictures have shown the usual suspects: luxury 4x4s struggling on tyre/rim combinations straight from the options list, a BMW Z4 M stationary on a slight gradient, and Series 1 Discovery drivers with enough ropes, winches and shovels to make it to the North Pole.

It's the latter I find particularly worrying. You just know they are storing bottled water and tinned foods. And shotgun cartridges. And fish hooks.

Now don't get too worried; if nature takes its usual course, by the time stocks of salt and road grit are replenished we shall be basking in sub–Saharan sun.

You can expect a raft of new car announcements pre–Geneva (Press Day is 2 March) in the next few weeks. Today, we have more images of Aston Martin's cheeky Cygnet, along with a new car from the man who brought us the Noble M12 and bigger–capacity Mustangs that reintroduce the famous 'BOSS' name.

Plus, there's all the auction and lifestyle news you'd expect from Classic Driver. In other words: we're back, perhaps a little blue at the edges, but bursting with enthusiasm for what's shaping up to be another fascinating year.

CLASSIC

AC Ace Ruddspeed

colour Red
interior colour Biscuit
drive RHD
year 1963
price P.O.R. GBP
country

The AC Ace is widely regarded as one of the most desirable classic British sportscars. Lively performance is coupled with wonderful handling, a gorgeous hand made aluminium body and a cockpit trimmed in leather. Early cars were powered by a Bristol engine however, by 1962, this engine had been withdrawn from production and AC badly needed a replacement unit for their ever popular sportscar. The solution was found in the six-cylinder 2.6 litre Ford Zephyr unit and a tuned version was fitted until 1963.

This car is offered in exceptional condition and while it has been fitted with a fresh Competition Engine Services tuned engine (approx 180 hp) the original 'matching number' engine comes with the car, also rebuilt and in a crate with supporting paperwork. In addition this car has a hardtop, full weather equipment, tonneau, side screens and detachable roll-hoop.

The paint on the car is very good and only recently applied and the original “Svecia Red” paintwork has given way to a very attractive darker burgundy colour that works very well with the biscuit leather interior. The car has a known history and seems to have had five owners prior to the current custodian.

!st William Smith 1963
2nd Derek Rowles 1964
3rd Viscount Ullswater 1966
4th Nicholas Portway 1967
5th Roger Flintoft 1969 to 2006 (37 years)

The Ace Ruddspeed is a very rare car and while 45 chassis were laid down a number of these were destined to be Aceca's and a number did not survive. The number of Ace Ruddspeeds in existence is thought to be in the low thirties.

This is an exceptional car having benefited from a thoughtful restoration and with the not inconsiderable bonus of a spare engine and gearbox in freshly re-built condition. It is an original right hand drive car with the period option of disc brakes and overdrive and has latterly been fitted with a curved screen as well. The car has an modern oil filter and cooler fitted. A box of history files accompany the car.
