EDITORIAL
I think I enjoyed digging out the reference books and researching the Ferrari 166 MM nearly as much as driving it. Without spoiling the tenor of the article, it should be noted just how important these little barchettas were.
Ferrari had only just started series production and was already in Formula 1. Its 2–litre 166 MM then swept all before it in the late 40s and early 50s, before ever–larger V12s found their way into more specialised chassis.
Driving one around now is the equivalent of tootling into town in this year's Le Mans–winning Peugeot. Except you'd be able to see out of the thing and give bystanders a cheery wave, not to mention popping a bag of groceries in the boot.
Elsewhere in ClassicInside you can read about the all–new Audi A8, a scaled–up A4 in appearance but none the worse for that and, from Japan, the story of the Rally Nippon Tokyo–Kyoto 2009.
THIS WEEK IN CLASSIC DRIVER
Driven: 1950 Ferrari 166 MM
The B4068 Salperton to Naunton road is not exactly the Futa Pass. I was, however, sitting behind the wheel of the same car that works Ferrari driver-to-be, Eugenio Castellotti, steered to sixth in class on the 1951 Mille Miglia.

Dating from 1958, the Speedster offered here is one of the last 250 or so built and as such benefits from all of the improvements made to the model throughout its short but illustrious lifespan. The car's last owner, Craig Smith of Kirkland, Washington State, owned the car for almost 25 years having purchased it in his home town in 1985 from Stuart McLeod.
During Mr. Smith's ownership the car covered less than 5000 miles but was regularly maintained to keep it in top mechanical order, evidenced by how well the car drives today. The accompanying Porsche Factory Certificate of Authenticity confirms that the car was originally delivered in its current colour of Ruby Red. Although stamped with the correct '616' type number, there is no evidence of an engine number suggesting it was an exchange crankcase at some stage and the factory did not stamp it.
According to a prominent American Porsche Club concours judge there would be no deduction of points for this fact. The car sports the correct bucket type seats with period racing style lap belts, an attractive, period, leather rimmed steering wheel and 'Sebring' wing mounted rear view mirror. Currently MoT tested until October 2010 and UK road registered, the car is ready to drive away.
