EDITORIAL

Two emails jumped out at me this week. First, gliding effortlessly into my inbox, came news of BMW’s dramatic new diesel hybrid concept (pictured above). Hot on its heels was 'Press–Information — The 911 Sport Classic — Exclusive for 250 Fans of the 911'. Hmm, things must be a little tough out there for the great Zuffenhausen manufacturer to start on so–called 'Limited Editions' to boost sales.

Hang about, let's have a look at this Porsche thing properly. Special colour (nothing new there); parts bin stuff such as lowered suspension and carbon brakes (right...); 'double–bubble' roof (interesting, a touch of 60s Carrera Abarth meets modern Carrera GT), and Espresso Nature natural leather that's woven into strips, apparently.

Plus, the ducktail is back. Yes, the famous fixed rear spoiler from the '73 Carrera RS is making a return, and the 'woven leather' bit is about making inserts that replicate the original's fabric centre–panels. Altogether, performance–wise it's a 911 Carrera S plus 20HP with some nice touches. So far so good; a lovely car.

However, get a load of this: "The Euro base price of the car without value–added tax and national specifications is 169,300 euros." Were you expecting that? No, me neither. That's a new 911 Turbo plus a Boxster for the holiday home. Serious money.

Does Porsche sit comfortably in this Ferrari and Aston Martin section of the market, with a special version of a relatively common car? I'm not sure, but — human nature being what it is — I bet it will sell all 250.
