EDITORIAL
There's one big story this week: the new Rolls–Royce 200EX. The British company has released details of what it refers to as an 'experimental' car and has confirmed that the four–door will be on show at Geneva in a week or so's time.
And even better than that, it's likely to be in the showrooms next year, being very much production–ready, as were all recent 'EX' Goodwood Rolls. I like it very much. The designers have managed to retain the styling elements of the Phantom, yet packaged them into more wieldy, everyday dimensions.
As with its larger sibling, 200EX also has an air of Rolls' past, and mixes it with futuristic elements such as the interior and dash. There's no name yet, although most pundits fancy a 'Silver' prefix and the company can choose from its rich heritage for the completion. It's also widely considered to be in the £175,000 range, so will make the case for cars such as the risible Maybach even weaker.
A little further down the scale (or perhaps, 'up the hill', given a test that included track–time at Gurston Down hillclimb course) is the new Abarth 500. Tony Dron has driven it, likes it and declares: "If I'd just bought this car, I'd be well pleased."
So, why wait until 2010 for the new Rolls? You couldn't spend more than a tenth of that on a new Abarth and it would be in your garage in a few weeks. If Fiat had followed the 1960s original to the letter, it would have had rear–opening doors, too, just like the Rolls.
