EDITORIAL

Well, I went there and truly did it all. We've got 'Part I' of our Monterey week coverage today in ClassicInside. First up is the Pebble Beach concours and auction reporting, with Laguna Seca and Carmel–by–the–Sea following in days to come.

Nothing can quite prepare a visitor new to the area at this time of the year. The first thing that hits you is the number of stunningly valuable cars, either driving on the roads or parked up in Carmel or Monterey.

Two or three California Spyders in the space of five minutes? You got it. McLaren F1 (very rare in the US) on CA 1? No problem and, oh yes, there's a teardrop Talbot driving along Carmel Valley Road, followed by a pre–War Alfa 8C.

The second thing is that 'big', in both literal and metaphorical senses, is best. I never thought I'd hear myself saying it, but even the 'brass' pioneering American 'earlies' have an appeal, while recent American market specials from Ferrari such as the Barchetta and Superamerica look much more at home than in the UK.

Most enduring memory of the week? It's a split decision between the Lancia D24 on the Tour d'Elegance and the Trans Am event at Laguna Seca — and meeting friends new and old, of course.
