Editorial

I’m not sure what’s the collective term for a group of auctions (a ‘catalogue’ perhaps?), but over the next couple of weeks they’ll be some serious money changing hands, firstly at Maranello on Sunday 20th May, when RM hold their first all-Ferrari sale, and the day after at Monaco, with Coys and Bonhams vying for success in the Principalité.

Next Friday we’ll be setting off for the Ferrari auction in something totally appropriate to the marque, the route and (hopefully) southern European weather, with a road trip to beat anything you care to mention. A full report in days to come, and I hope to meet some collectors and traders at Fiorano on Sunday.

Before all of that of course is tomorrow’s Bonhams Aston Martin sale at Works Service, Newport Pagnell. The Buckinghamshire town will once again be the epicentre of activities Aston, much like it was last Sunday when over 100 of the company’s last bespoke, flagship, Newport Pagnell-produced cars assembled in Tickford St before setting off for the short drive to Silverstone.

What a sight! And one we were privileged to have been part of, driving the Vanquish S converted to a conventional manual by Works Service.

An abbreviated ClassicInside next week, but one that will include a review of the Aston Sale, a report on the Supercar Tour, and an impression of just what 612 hp under your right foot feels like…

Ferrari 288 GTO -
The factory prototype and the only original Giallo Fly example

colour Giallo Fly Yellow
interior colour Black
drive LHD
year 1985
chassis ZFFPA16B000047649
estimate 400.000 - 450.000 EUR
country
The example offered here is the sole surviving factory prototype for the 288 GTO series. It is one of the four developmental cars built by Ferrari before production of the 288 GTO began. Two of these four were used for crash tests and subsequently destroyed. Another one was disassembled and sold as spare parts to a Ferrari customer who had crashed his car.

Chassis 47649 thus remains the only development car in existence and its prototype status is the reason it is not listed as one of the 272 production examples built. The car was owned by Ferrari until 1985 when a special Ferrari customer succeeded in buying it.

Any of the 272 production 288 GTOs would be a rare find today. The sole surviving factory prototype makes it arguably the most important of all. Furthermore, all the production cars were finished in Corsa red, making this prototype in Giallo Fly (yellow) the instantly recognizable as the birth of a legend.

Aston Martin DB4GT
Original LHD

colour Grey/Green
interior colour Tan
drive LHD
year 1962
chassis 0173L
estimate Refer Dept. EUR
country
The third last non-Zagato bodied DB4 GT ever built and the penultimate example of the 27 LHD cars, originally sold directly to a Canadian customer in May of 1962. It was specified with wing fuel tanks and because it was so late in the production run, featured the shallower hood scoop and DB5 style tail lamps.

It is described by the vendor as in perfect working order.

It is rare that these specialist motorcars come onto the market and so time should be taken to consider this, one of the finest example we have had the pleasure to present, and to ponder when indeed another may come along.
