Editorial

By the time you read this Paris Rétromobile 2007 will be just opening its doors to the public. Buoyed by the traditional home manufacturer support, and this year a two-day Christie’s Sale of Automobilia and Motor Cars (that sadly won’t include the Auto Union, although it will be on display), the show looks like being one of the very best.

There’ll also be a good display of cars for sale from some of the world’s best dealers, many of them familiar to Classic Driver readers, and we’ll be carrying a full report of all the action next week.

The marque Diatto is a new one to me, but it has, apparently, a rich heritage and one that has been made use of by its current owners who have commissioned Zagato to body a concept car for the forthcoming Geneva Salon. Pleasing in the press photo, wait and see until the Geneva Press day in two and a half weeks’ time.

Finally (fittingly), Aston Martin has announced a special Vanquish S that will represent the last stages of production of the company’s 200 mph supercar. While we have all got used to seeing DB9s and V8 Vantages around and about, a Vanquish is still a rare sight, even in London. Until the DBS is officially on sale, if you want the ultimate, this is the one to have and the company anticipates an early take-up of the 40 cars available.

So get your order in fast.

0536MD was originally supplied to Luigi Taramazzo in 1955 who campaigned the car in that year's Mille Miglia. He was to campaign the car further that year at Monza and Imola, with a 2nd in class and 6th overall.

Later in that year the car was returned to the Ferrari factory for a service and rebuild, and was sold to Luigi Chinetti and imported into America. Bob Goldich bought it and entered it in numerous events around North America, finishing first overall at Elkhart Lake. Passing through another change of ownership, the car was bought by Jack Brewer in 1958 who ran the car at various events such as Watkins Glen.

The car went through a number of changes of ownership returning to Europe in the early 1990s, receiving a completed restoration by Terry Hoyle and DK Engineering. Recently the car has been campaigned successfully in the Shell Historic Challenge, Mille Miglia Retrospective and the Le Mans Classic.

0536 MD is supplied with a number of spares, and a large history file, which includes a large selection of archive pictures of the car being campaigned in Europe and America in period.
