Editorial

Well BRABUS have done it again. With a fire-breathing turbo M-B V12 they’ve set a new world speed record for a humble ‘sedan’. Whatever you might think of some of the German tuner's cosmetic efforts (no doubt specified by their particular clientele), you cannot deny the excellence of their engineering. And be it saloon, 4 x 4 or sports car, they have taken away AMG’s mantle of bespoke Mercedes modifier to the world. As AMG is now part of the Daimler Chrysler corporation, their hands are no doubt to a certain extent tied with a view to some of the more outrageous speed and power figures.

350 km/h (or around 217.5 mph) is one extraordinary speed, although another publication’s recent road test of Bentley’s Continental Flying Spur has revealed another 200+ mph maximum - and Bentley makes do with a piffling 552 bhp, that’s some 90 bhp less that the BRABUS E-Class. Anyone out there know what a new M5 would achieve, unfettered on a test track?

Such excessive velocities were far away from our thoughts of course when driving the latest Ferrari Superamerica in Italy and France the other week. With its unique roof system and even more improved performance it’s a throwback to the company’s special customer cars of the ‘50s and ‘60s. You can read the test below, suffice it to say: I want one.
