Editorial

The world’s motor industry is gathered in Detroit for the next 10 days or so, and the highlight so far has to be the new Jaguar sports car. Dubbed ‘Advanced Lightweight Coupé’, the car is staking a claim to be the heir to the company’s racing cars of the early ‘60s, designed then with input from Jaguar’s renowned aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer. It’s a tough looking machine that productionising will make into a viable alternative in the 911/6-Series/AMV8 category. It would also make a useful GT racing car – pity for all the Jaguar fans out there that Aston Martin got there first with the DBR9!

I’ve also got to say that the Chrysler Firepower looks pretty useful too. In terms of dynamism and styling, the New World is very much meeting the Old now, and this is just another (very) high performance US-built car at what would be an attractive price – should they decide to make it. And this afternoon I will be sampling the latest version of that American icon – the 2005 Mustang. Full details next week.

It’s twenty five years since Audi introduced its ‘quattro’ all-wheel drive system and whether the ‘Allroad quattro Concept’ debuting at Detroit is a suitable way of celebrating it I leave you, dear reader, to be the judge. Suffice it to say I think we will remember the Ingolstadt company more for its pioneering use of 4wd, and superbly sporting intercontinental mile-coverers, than for ‘Audi side assist’, a system designed to save the driver the neck-twisting look over the shoulder before moving out. Do we really need this? No.

Until next week,
