There seems to be a bit of a Ferrari theme to this week’s Classic Inside. And that’s without a feature on driving Eddie Irvine’s old 288 GTO that you’ll see next Friday. Things have a habit of working out like that, so let’s enjoy it while we can. There’s no doubt that there are few more powerful images of style and performance than the yellow and black prancing horse shield, set on a vivid red background. This weekend is of course the Goodwood Festival (pre-booked tickets only, as if we have to remind you), and one of the most popular features is the ‘Supercar Run’. This is where modern performance cars can be seen in action driving up the hill, as well as on static display (but in a friendly way, where external access at least is allowed and encouraged) in the paddock.

Ferrari and Maserati will have a multi-car line-up to ‘do battle’ with their market competitors Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche et al. For most spectators the 20 ft or so that separates them from the track with an MC12 thundering up it may as well be the distance from here to Mars, representing, as it does, the gulf between the desire and actual attainment of such objects. But, just as you might fantasise about owning the Goodwood Estate, you can also dream of having a shed-full of supercars to line the air-conditioned garage block that always features in these dreams (they do in mine anyway).

And of course the great thing about Goodwood is that the location is so beautiful that it really sets the cars off nicely. I’m sure all the marketing people have worked this out a while ago, and realised that blasting round Silverstone with a few loudspeakers, a burger van and a few bods in woolly hats and c.1971 JPS jackets as a backdrop is hardly the same.

We’ll be there - full report next week.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato

Brainchild of former Aston Martin CEO Victor Gauntlett and Gianni Zagato of Carrozzeria Zagato, the V8 Zagato Coupe competed with the Ferrari 288GTO and Porsche’s 959 for performance and exclusivity during the supercar race of the late 1980s. With a limited run of only 50 production cars, the Zagato offered a significant weight reduction and aerodynamic advantage over the standard V8 Vantage. Performance was described by Autocar magazine in 1986 as ‘….little short of incredible’.

Finished in Salisbury Blue with Navy Blue hide, the 1986 car we are offering has had just one owner from new, and completed only 4,400 miles.
