Great news from Aston yesterday – they’re returning to racing with the DB9 after the longish break since they ran the AMR1 cars in the prototype category. This time it’s a return to the ‘production’ GT class, a type of racing CEO Dr Ulrich Bez is a firm believer in as it “can demonstrate that our cars are not only the best on the road, but also on the racing track”. Great stuff - I can’t wait until the end of next year when the car breaks cover and we can see it up against the all-conquering Ferrari 575s. Sponsorship considerations not withstanding, it will be interesting to see the final colour scheme. Until recently strong money would have been on the classic Aston Racing Green and colour coded noses - but you never know nowadays. A recent visit to Gaydon showcased a very invigorated company, confident in its vision of the future and very willing to break with tradition.

This week’s Christie’s Auction in London produced the highest price paid for a car at auction in the UK this year - £731,250 for the 1998 McLaren F1. I am happy to report that I was there and witnessed a truly exciting battle between several bidders, it being one of those great occasions when you really did not know what was going to happen next. Full details in our review below.

We also have details of the forthcoming sale of selections from the Playboy archives, to be held in New York on the 17th of this month. Perhaps not strictly ‘PC’ these days, but you have to respect a publication that did, for example, first publish Ian Fleming’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ in 1963.

I understand the Playboy catalogues are becoming collector’s items in their own right now – before the sale has even been held – all attempts by your Editor to obtain one, for purely journalistic reasons of course, failing miserably.

H&H’s sale at Buxton this December, their ‘10th Anniversary Auction’, features over 80 cars many of which have celebrity connections or at least interesting prior ownership. Take the ‘Lady Di’ Range Rover for example, or one of David Beckham’s first ‘grown-up’ cars the 1996 BMW M3 Evolution Convertible at £18,000 – 20,000. Out of the paparazzi flashlight, but still belonging to this category, is the 1985 Mikkola/Hertz ex-works Audi Quattro SWB at £90,000 – 110,000...

Christie's Auction 2 December 2003 , London - Review

Such was the pre-sale interest in the headline lots at Christie’s December London Sale that it was strictly ‘standing room only’ at the Jack Barclay showrooms just across the Thames from the Houses of Parliament. The deceased estate ‘SHY’ collection was up for auction, and of course there was the exciting story of the Bizzarrini, Alfa Romeo TT33, Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and McLaren quartet. The last two sold and someone new will be sitting in the F1’s driving seat this week – for the princely sum of over £700,000...

Bonhams at Olympia 1st December 2003 - Review

Following straight on from their adjacent all-Concorde Sale at Olympia which sold all lots entered, grossing £763,700, Bonhams sold a good proportion of motor-cars including the truly magnificent 1909 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Silver Ghost ‘Roi-de-Belges’ for £379,500 including premium. Right at the end of the proceedings someone picked up a bargain in the form of a 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS Touring for £24,725. Left hand to right hand drive conversion not withstanding, Christmas had clearly come early at Olympia...
