Following on from last week's comments on the new Ferrari GT 2+2
someone must be listening out there because an extra press release
was issued and I quote - "This layout also leaves substantial
space available for the 2+2 cabin, which will comfortably accommodate
four occupants, who can enjoy the quiet and refined delights of
the interior
" So it will be a bigger car than the outgoing
model, and a potential Bentley Conti rival.
Seen at Goodwood last weekend, as part of the 'Supercar Run', Crewe's
latest attracted a great deal of attention, and finished in a metallic
black/brown with cream leather interior looked very desirable indeed.
So much so that Porsche must have done a bit of head scratching,
for their Carrera GT was also on show and, when your correspondent
was around at least, it was not getting the same interest. Ditto
the 'new' Ford GT. I think the problem was that people just did
not realise that,
in an abundance of riches, these very significant cars were there
to be touched and photographed.
That's the trouble with Goodwood, it is so extraordinary that reality
is put on hold and you enter a sort of twilight fantasy world where
anything can happen. Like meeting Jim Hall, THE Jim Hall, the man
that created the Chaparrals. Or Nino Vaccarella and Art Merzario,
legends walking straight out of the history books.
We did manage to exchange a few words with the great Sicilian, but
he had an appointment you see with a Ferrari 312PB and, actions
clearly speaking louder than words, let his driving do the talking,
exiting the collecting area as if he was transported back in time.
Just like the rest of us that weekend.

Viva
Vaccarella - Sicilian legend re-united with Ferrari 312PB at Goodwood
2003
The
Goodwood Festival of Speed saw one of Italys greatest road-racing
drivers not only re-united with the type of car he drove in the
1973 Targa Florio, the F1 engined, boxer 3 litre Ferrari
312PB, but also with his co-driver in that greatest of races, Arturo
Merzario. Nino Vaccarella, winner of the Targa for Ferrari in 1965
and Alfa in 1971, is the legendary Sicilian lawyer from Collesano
who, in the 60s and 70s, made this race his own due to unique local
knowledge of the 45 mile course and world class driving ability...

The
Tec-Mec Maserati did not sell, but Bonhams were able to give the
1964 ex-Alan Mann Lotus Cortina a new home, rumoured to be someone

in the Bonhams marquee saw bidding for many of the lots on offer,
a highlight of which was the 1971 ex-London Motor Show Ferrari 365GTB/4

Aston
Martin DB4GT Conversion
Converted
for me in 1995 from a standard DB4 chassis to a DB4GT short-wheelbase
by Alan Pointer at Bodylines. All new body panels were fitted along
with lightweight rear and boot floors.
At this time the car was totally restored by us using standard engine
(single plug) upgraded to 4200cc with triple Webers using a standard
Aston 4 speed gearbox. The car was fitted out exactly as a GT using
all original GT items such as glass side windows, door frames, window
regulators, front seats, instruments, Borrani wire wheels, correct
35 gal petrol tank and fillers. All of which were either stock items
from our years of maintaining Astons or purchased in to validate
an original GT. The brakes were updated to DB5 series units.
The car was used on the road and some road rallies and hill climbs
then converted to a more race specification up to todays date
where the car runs successfully in the AMOC championship under class
B2 (mildly modified).
These current modifications include. Completely rebuilt engine using
steel crankshaft, lightweight pistons with forged con-rods. Polished
cylinder head with larger valves and modified camshafts. Branched
exhaust system and the whole unit is balanced and Blue-printed.
Lightweight flywheel with racing AP clutch mated to a Standard Aston
5 speed gearbox. Larger capacity Aluminium custom made radiator
with race hoses. New Koni shock absorbers (telescopic replacing
rear lever arms). Side windows replaced with Perspex. A full 6 point
welded in roll cage fitted with a fixed race seat and 6 point race
harness. 80 litre Race fuel cell in aluminium box with full fire
extinguisher plumbed system and handheld. The original boot and
bonnet lids have been removed and replaced with identical items
secure by quick release fasteners.
Numerous other more minor modification have been fitted which can
be viewed on inspection. It runs on Yokohama 225/60 tyres on 15
rims and retains the standard DB5 brakes and most of the interior
trim and complies fully with the AMOC/Anglo and Collonade championship
regulations.
We have retained all the original items and with some work could
be converted back to standard road specification. The car is kept
in concours condition as it attends all race meetings.
