Editorial

Classic Driver does not usually comment on the world of two-wheeled transport; however we cannot let the sad news this week of the death of legendary British motorcycle racer Barry Sheene pass without comment. Together, on two wheels and four, Sheene and James Hunt won their respective world championships in 1976 and, through their larger-than-life personalities, became everyday media stars in their own right in the UK. Think of a current F1 driver with (a) personality and you don't even scratch the surface of their popularity with the public at the time. Lucky with the ladies being an understatement, and coming from different ends of the social spectrum, the two dominated the headlines, front page and back, throughout the late Seventies. When Hunt died in 1993, at 45, the tributes flowed and this time has been no different. When Sheene returned to Historic motorcycle racing in the last few years he exhibited the same flair he did 30 years ago. Having seen him win at the Goodwood Revival last year, I now consider this a great privilege considering how advanced was his illness.

"Popular heroes of the public's imagination" is the description Charles Harbord uses to embrace the racing drivers of the Fifties and Sixties, in the introduction to his interview with Roy Salvadori, from which we are privileged to include some excerpts this week.

Sheene and Hunt, 1976 Champions both, were undoubtedly members of this exclusive club.
