Editorial

For a regional auction house, H&H certainly attracts some interesting entries, as our preview of the Derbyshire sale on 3rd - 4th December shows. But then, it looks as though H&H won't be a regional auction house for very much longer.

Next May, H&H is intending – in its own words – to cross the North-South divide by holding a sale in London. This first southern sale is scheduled for 7th May at Olympia and, although the Cheshire-based auction company doesn't currently pull in as many high quality entries as London's “big three“, this could be about to change. Over the last ten years H&H has built up a reputation for highly successful sales and the company's move into the southern market could mean some stiff competition on the London auction circuit.

For the pre-Christmas 2002 London sales, however, it's down to Bonhams, Christie's and Coys to provide the razzmatazz. And this year is no disappointment, with brimming catalogues to take us through next week: a week which is the high point of the UK auction calendar. We preview all three London sales, with full car and motorcycle entry lists and – if you can't make it to the auctions themselves - we'll be bringing you results in the near future. Finally, don't forget Bonhams' breathtaking annual Ferrari sale in Gstaad, to be held on 20th December.

(Steve Wakefield, Managing Editor, will be back next week)

Meanwhile, the new Spyker C8 Double12S, launched at the same show, comes from the opposite direction: it’s a barely tamed, road-going version of a full-blown race car...

CLASSIC CAR OF THE WEEK

Lotus Elan Sprint

The Lotus Elan started off well in 1963 and simply got better as the years went by. Despite the strenuous efforts of Lotus engineers, it has to be admitted that the Elan did retain a reputation for unreliability but its apologists claim that a well-built and well-serviced Elan has always been unlikely to give trouble. Most important of all, and unlike many other cars which seemed great when they were first seen, it was never allowed to develop into an overweight travesty of the original idea...
