Recognised around the world, American road signs are some of the most iconic symbols of the last 100 years of United States history. Midway through November, Bonhams will put a collection of some of the most memorable up for auction at the ‘Classic California’ sale in Los Angeles.

Alongside the automobile sale – which will include Elvis Presley’s Cadillac – the automobilia sale will feature a collection of classic road signs from across California. The highlight is an original ‘reflecting’ sign from Route 66: the legendary highway from Los Angeles to Chicago. While the other road signs offered are estimated at triple figure sums, Bonhams predicts the symbolic Route 66 sign could command between 2,500 and 4,500 US dollars.
