In our Icons of Watchmaking series, watch expert Gisbert L. Brunner gives us some insight into timepieces with a cult status. This week, we put pedal to the metal with the Porsche Design P'6530 Chronograph from 1980.

The Porsche Design Chronograph, for long considered a fashion fad of the 1980s, is currently experiencing a revival. The modern lines come from the pen of the designer Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, a member of the famous Porsche family and one of the main stylists of the 911. Like all Porsche Design products, the watches took their technical inspiration from the cars bearing the same shield.

The first Porsche Design timepieces were created under the auspices of IWC Schaffhausen but, since 1998, the iconic watches have been made by Eterna, which had been bought by Porsche Design three years earlier. The Heritage P'6530 chronograph uses the time-proven Valjoux 7750 movement, housed in a contemporary 44mm diameter case.
