Bonhams 'Quail Lodge Sale', 16-17 August 2012: Preview

1964 Huffaker-Genie Mk 10 USRRC Sports-Racer: $140,000 - 160,000

With competition cars playing a leading role in the adjacent ‘The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering’, it’s no wonder so many significant racing cars highlight Bonhams’ 2012 Carmel sale.

In addition to the ex-GTC Gulf Team Davidoff 1997 McLaren F1 GTR 'Longtail', a leading entry must surely be the 1966 Ford GT40, chassis GT40 P/1033, estimated at $2,000,000 – 3,000,000. When marque expert Ronnie Spain declares that “of all original GT40s, GT40 P/1033 comes with one of the top provenances I have ever been able to supply”, you have to take notice. Like so many of its sister cars, it’s had an eventful life, but validation does not come much better than this.

In period, it was sold first as a road car by Garages Filipinetti and then converted for racing to be used under the patronage of Bolivian tin millionaire Jaime Ortiz-Patino.

1972 Ferrari 246 Dino GTS: $220,000 - 250,000

Joining the GT40 is a variety of similarly powerful sports-racing cars that include an ex-Mecom Racing 1966 Lola T70 MkII GT Coupé ($300,000 - 400,000), the 1964 Huffaker-Genie Mk 10 USRRC car you see above (reasonably estimated at $140,000 - 160,000 and very usable in events worldwide), and the ex-N.A.R.T. 1972/75 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Competizione Spyder.

Now this car might not have the sleek yet brutal looks of a ‘traditional’ Comp’ Daytona coupé, but its Giovanni Michelotti-styled bodywork is unique, and it was entered at Le Mans in 1975 (not actually running in the race due to a disagreement between Chinetti and the ACO). $1.9 million - 2.4 million is the estimate – and I’d like to see someone buy this and really wring its neck on the circuits.

1941 Tatra T87 Aerodynamic Saloon: $160,000 - 200,000


1967 Aston Martin DB6: $300,000 - 375,000	1967 Porsche 911S 2.0-Litre: $90,000 - 110,000

Other, street, Ferraris in Bonhams’ catalogue include a couple of Dino GTSs, a 1967 330 GTC ($275,000 - 350,000) and a $160,000 - 180,000, 1967 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2.

On the Aston front, there are two cars, a 1938 15/98 Sports Tourer ($200,000 - 250,000) and a time-warp 1967 DB6 Saloon (sadly not carrying an estimate to match its many original features – it’s $300,000 - 375,000, ouch).

Looking at slightly more affordable entries, we like the 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet (a West Coast car wonderfully painted in Tobacco Brown, for $120,000 - 150,000), the 1967 Fiat Abarth TC Berlina Corsa ($50,000 - 70,000) and the 1967 Porsche 911S 2.0-Litre. The latter is an early ‘S’ in mostly original condition. Very much a car of the moment, it’s estimated at $90,000 - 110,000.

On Thursday 16 August at Quail Lodge, Bonhams will offer nearly 300 items of books, automobilia and motoring art, followed by 57 classic motorcycles. The latter includes a superb 1938 Harley-Davidson EL 'Knucklehead' estimated at $28,000 - 34,000.

Bonhams' 2012 Quail Lodge collectors' motor car sale will be held at the Quail Lodge Golf Club, 8000 Valley Greens Drive, Carmel, CA 93923 USA on Friday, 17 August. Motor cars will start at 11:00 Pacific Standard Time.
