Coys at Royal Horticultural Halls, London: 8 March 2011 – Preview

1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB 'Aluminium' Spyder - Refer Department

Prior to the motor car entries in Coys’ next London auction, over 130 film posters will be offered for sale. So, before the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB 'Aluminium' Spyder, prepare for the ‘Attack of the 50 Foot Woman’...

We’ll finish with the movie posters (there are some crackers) but, looking over the 58-car entry, what catches the Classic Driver’s eye?

Spotting the ‘Refer Department’ stuff is always good for starters, as you just know the leading entries will need a call to Coys’ southwest London offices for guidelines on the price.

Three cars will have you on the blower: the 1991 Lamborghini Diablo (LHD, red and out of a private collection); the 1954 Mercedes 220 Cabriolet A (dark red with grey leather, just one of three examples in the UK, registered ‘914 XUS’); and the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB 'Aluminium' Spyder, a quality ‘recreation’ based on a 250 GTE chassis.

Looking elsewhere, and with the benefit of quoted estimates, we can say that the 1956 Aston Martin DB 2/4 (£80,000 - 90,000) looks pretty on the money and the black, ex-Californian 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coupé 3.5 Litre (£24,000 - 28,000) is a long-term resident of our (realistic) fantasy garage.

1991 Lamborghini Diablo - Refer Department 1938 Bentley 4.25 Litre Sports Saloon by Thrupp & Maberly - £25,000 - 30,000

Described as “possibly one of the finest examples of the Bentley S1 available in the UK today”, ‘661 UXM’, the 1958 Shell-Grey/Tudor Grey car estimated at £28,000 - £35,000, does look rather good. It’s been the subject of much restoration work in the US and the UK (including the fitting of a modern 4-speed automatic and air-conditioning) – with bills for approximately £23,000 for the more recent work to prove it.

In a sale with quite a number of Bentleys catalogued, mention must also be made of the 1959 S1 Drophead Coupé by HJ Mulliner (£140,000 - 160,000), the 1992 Continental R Coupé (£27,000 - 32,000... you know we like these cars) and the 1938 4.25 Litre Sports Saloon by Thrupp & Maberly for £25,000 - 30,000.

1933 Lagonda 16/80 Open Tourer - £65,000 - 75,000 1956 Aston Martin DB 2/4 - £80,000 - 90,000

The latter is one of a number of desirable pre-War cars (always a Coys speciality) that includes a 1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 by Rippon (£22,000 - 30,000), a sporting 1933 Lagonda 16/80 Open Tourer (£65,000 - 75,000) and a jolly old (1913) Austro-Daimler 14/32hp Sports Tourer at a today’s money estimate of £80,000 - 100,000.

1958 Bentley S1 - £28,000 - 35,000

With Aston Martin reprising the ‘Virage’ moniker, perhaps buyers should pile into the 80s/90s original before the price goes up. The 1994 Aston Martin Virage Volante, Lot 328, is priced at £28,000 - 32,000 (some £120,000 short of the latest Virage Volante) and, in silver/blue hide, is the archetypal ‘lot of car for the money’.

1969 Lotus Elan S4 Drophead Coupé - £13,000 - 15,000 1959 AC Ace - £120,000 - 140,000

Now, let’s get back to that 50 Foot Woman. ‘She’ (Lot 125, £1800 - 2000, Argentina One Sheet ), has over 130 fellow entries from classic cinema releases such as ‘Star Wars’, ‘Forbidden Planet’, ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Some Like It Hot’ and my favourite, Lot 042 ‘Italian Job, in Italian', estimated at £800 - £1000.

“Hang on, lads; I've got a great idea...”

1972 De Tomaso Pantera - £24,000 - 30,000
