The New Maserati Quattroporte: One down, 49,999 to go

Maserati’s ambitious plans for the next few years (it intends to be producing 50,000 units annually by 2015) took a further step today when the Modenese company released images of an all-new Quattroporte which will debut in Detroit, next January, at the North American International Auto Show.

Until then, Maserati is keeping technical details of the new car under wraps. Appearing longer than before (to accommodate rear-seat passengers in greater comfort – important in ‘chauffeur’ markets such as China) the car bears a resemblance to the current QP.

Its styling has been executed under the careful guidance of ex-Pininfarina styling chief, and current Head of the Maserati Design Centre, Lorenzo Ramaciotti.

The likely initial powerplant will be a thoroughly up-to-date version of the familiar 4.7-litre V8. This will be married to a ZF conventional automatic gearbox. For the future, though, the options are open, as the company will also be adding to its range a luxury 4x4 and a ‘BMW 5 Series-sized saloon’.

If the rumours are true, at any rate.

The engines will be produced in the Ferrari plant in Maranello.
