Lamborghini will follow in the footsteps of Porsche and Ferrari in 2009, by launching an exclusive one-make racing series. The specially built, 570bhp Gallardo LP 560-4s are aimed at professional and ‘gentleman’ drivers alike, with an anticipated 30-car grid forming the fastest single-model series in the world.
Lamborghini's lack of racing history (Ferruccio was only interested in making road cars) seems to be no hindrance to the marque's modern motorsport ambitions, particularly with today's Audi connection. Unlike their FIA GT cousins, Lamborghini's Super Trofeo cars will feature permanent 4wd - although extensive weight reductions mean 1300kg, combined with 570bhp, should negate much of the on-paper power-to-weight disadvantage.
The first round of the 2009 provisional calendar will be held on 3 May at Silverstone, followed by Adria in Italy (17 May), the Norisring in Germany (5 July), Spa (2 August) and Catalunya in Spain (20 September). The finals – of the series sponsored by Swiss watchmaker Blancpain – will be held on 4 October at Monza.
The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo will support top-level rounds of the FIA GT Championship, DTM and FIA WTCC (World Touring Car Championship). Either one or two drivers can register for each three-day race weekend, comprising free practice and qualifying, and three 40-minute races during Saturday and Sunday. The results of the three races are added together. Interestingly, no ‘success ballast’ is added to winning cars, and they cannot be modified during the season.
The Super Trofeo car and parts package is offered at 200,000 euros plus tax and entry fee via Lamborghini dealerships, with support and parts available trackside. The company will build a ‘prestigious Lamborghini Village’ to ‘provide a luxurious paddock package in true Lamborghini style, for drivers, sponsors and guests’.
Classic Driver will be at the official launch of the new series next weekend so you can expect further, exclusive photos and news of what looks like being an exciting competition in 2009.
