The Bologna Motor Show in December will see the unveiling of a new, limited-edition version of the Porsche Boxster, of which just 1,960 will be made. That number – 1,960 – is just one of the ways in which the Boxster RS 60 Spyder harks back to Porsche’s motorsport heritage of the 1960s, a golden era for the marque. After countless class wins, the Type 718 RS 60 Spyder took on and beat competitors in categories for larger-engined cars, snatching overall victory in the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, in the hands of Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien.

Now, Porsche claims that “the new Boxster RS 60 Spyder is taking up the momentum and purism of that so successful mid-engine two-seater racing car.” The front end of the limited edition Boxster is noticeably different from the standard Boxster S, while a modified exhaust system combining a sports exhaust with a dual tail-pipe increases engine output to 303bhp. Spacer plates move the 19in wheels into an even more prominent position in the wheelarches and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), fitted as standard, maximises both sporting and comfort-focused attributes.



Paintwork in GT silver metallic contrasts with the natural leather interior in Carrera red. The roof is also finished in red. As an alternative, there’s the option of dark grey natural leather with a black roof.

The features of this special model also include stainless steel door trim strips proudly bearing the ‘RS 60 Spyder’ model designation, an ‘extra-sporting’ gearshift lever, special surface grooves in the centre sections of the sports seats and the centre door linings, as well as on the steering wheel rim and handbrake lever.

The instrument clusters are finished in GT silver metallic, while the binnacle – usually positioned above the instrument cluster – has been dropped for this special model, the large central rev-counter and the two circular dials at the outside adding a more purist flavour.



The worldwide market launch of the new Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder begins in March 2008. In Germany, the base retail price (excluding taxes) will be 53,500 euros.
