The 356 series was without doubt the model which catapulted the Porsche marque into world-wide contention in the hotly-contested sports car market. It put into practice Dr Porsche's highly evolved theories about ensuring traction through rear-mounted engines, as had been put into practice in some of the early Cisitalia racing cars.
Another keynote was to keep everything as light as possible, so that all 356 bodywork variations always demonstrated the classic engineering principle of form following function, remaining sharp and purposeful.
Today's is a left-hand-drive example of the ever-popular Cabriolet, (now basically the only accessibly-priced open 356), and is the delectable twin-grille T6 B, one of only 248 built in total, and dates from 1962. Like the vast majority of production cars it was sold new in the United States, and remained there, principally in California, until recently making its way back to the UK.
On arrival the car presented well as a good original example, and responded to a mechanical service comprising ignition points, spark plugs, oil change and an expert tuneup, and is now lively and responsive to drive. The coachwork is in Glacier White, whose paint is not new but extremely acceptable, with a contrasting black interior. It has a new MOT certificate and is expected to be road registered by the time of the auction.
These glamorous early Porsches are as usable as they are handsome, and in recent years they have also begun to make great strides in value; this one still represents sound value for a good example.
