The Porsche Dauer 962 Le Mans was the result of Porsche's desire to enter a 962 in the FIA GT class at the Le Mans 24 hours which culminated in the final win at at Le Mans for the 962, seven years after the previous six consecutive victories. For this they needed a race car based on a fully type approved road car, Jochen Dauer's race team, in association with the Porsche factory, took original 962 chassis's and modified them to meet Germany's strict TUV type approval for the road.
Originally Porsche’s test chassis for their short lived V8 endurance engine programmme, 962-8-001 was fitted with the usual 962 3 litre flat 6 engine and converted to road specification.
The major changes for road use were a new carbon-kevlar body, similar to the race-car but with a larger, two seat cockpit, hydraulic suspension allowing the car to meet minimum ride height regulations and catalytic converters. With leather trim, air conditioning and fitted luggage compartments one doesn’t lack for creature comforts in the 730bhp, 1080Kg, 251mph bolide.
