Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival, 29 June 2012: Preview

1961 Ferrari 250 GTE: £75,000 - 85,000

While both the George Daniels Collection and the Olav Glasius Lotus Collection are deservedly receiving much coverage, Bonhams’ 2012 Festival sale includes many other entries, ranging from a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C formerly owned by ‘Le Patron’ to a ‘barn-find’ Ferrari 250 GTE.

The annual Goodwood Festival auction is one of Bonhams' Blue Riband events. Over the years, many significant cars have been sold at the quintessentially English location that, during three days in June, becomes the meeting-place for industry big-wigs, top collectors and motorsport junkies worldwide.

The interest in cars formerly owned by the late George Daniels has been phenomenal. The headlining lot, the ex-Sir Henry 'Tim' Birkin, 1929-31 4½-Litre Supercharged 'Blower' Bentley Single-Seater, carries no estimate but could well prove to be the most expensive Bentley sold at auction. Another stellar Daniels car is the ex-Works Le Mans 24-Hour race, 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 Spyder Lungo, another ex-Birkin (and Johnny Wakefield – no relation, sadly) machine. This is estimated at £2.5 million - 4 million and worth every penny.

The cataloguers in Bond Street have done us all a favour, by the way: the motor cars start at 14:15 sharp and immediately go into the Daniels Collection. Miss this at your peril.

Left-hand drive, 1968 Lotus Elan Series 4 SE Roadster: £35,000 - 45,000

We’ve taken a look at the Glasius Lotus Collection elsewhere on Classic Driver; suffice to say that there are some very nice pieces indeed up for grabs, whether you are a Lotus fan or otherwise. I fall in the latter camp but wouldn’t mind either the LHD 1962 Lotus Elite Series II (£45,000 - 60,000) or the recently recommissioned, 1962 Lotus-Buick V8 Type 19 'Monte Carlo'. Estimated at £150,000 - 200,000, this should be one very quick car.

The for-restoration 1961 Ferrari 250 GTE, at £75,000 - 85,000, reprises a similar ‘barn-find’ car sold by Bonhams in Oxford for £101,180 in March this year. This GTE is still in its unusual – original, note – colour scheme of an Azzuro roof over a Blu Sera main body. These ‘restoration class’ cars have done well recently and there’s no reason to suppose this one will be any less successful come 29 June.

Elsewhere in the catalogue, there’s the familiarly comfortable Bonhams mix of fine pre-War cars (1929 Bentley 4½ litre Vanden Plas style Tourer, £300,000 - 350,000) and classic post-War (the £45,000 - 60,000, 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII Phase II and the 1962 Porsche 356B Super Cabriolet, at £60,000 - 80,000.

Being a Goodwood sale, the quality of entries (and associated estimates) is generally on the higher side. One of the few ‘Refer Dept’ lots is the 1912 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Double Pullman Limousine. The catalogue description prefixes this car with ‘The Corgi’, referring to its role as a 1960s die-cast model by the British company Mettoy under its ‘Corgi’ brand.

Not my idea of a Christmas gift, I have to say; although the local toy shop would no doubt have swapped Auntie Mabel’s well-meant pressie without argument for a Ferrari 250 LM or Porsche Carrera 6.

Prior to the motor cars, Bonhams will offer nearly 200 lots of automobilia, including 'Roy Nockolds Ferrari 275P vs Ford GT40 Le Mans, 1964', signed and dated, acrylic on canvas, 47 x 58cm, framed. Estimate: £1000 - 1200.
