French registration • The most radical sports car of all time• Amazing performance • Known history, recorded in the Shelby Registry• In superb condition 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 roadster Say ‘Cobra’ to any car enthusiast and you will see his pulse quicken and eyes start shining with particular brilliance. But say ‘Cobra 427’ and you will trigger a passionate response and a lively discussion on the outstanding performance of the greatest creation of the late Carroll Shelby. The Texan engineer passed away last May, but his Cobra is more than ever alive. His idea to shoehorn a mighty big Ford V8 in the chassis of the lightweight and well designed AC Ace created a sports car that remains the most amazing from that era. After the 289 version (4.7-liters), Shelby continued increasing the power and size of the engine, to stay ahead of the competition that threatened to overtake him. He therefore placed, in a modified chassis and equipped with a coil-sprung suspension system, the 427 engine (7-liters) with 425bhp that made the Cobra real dragster for the road. Even today, the performance of this car is startling. And they were the base which built the legend that accompanies this formidable serpent! The car on offer rolled out of the workshops of AC Cars on July 24, 1965, and was then sent to Shelby in the U.S., so that the car would be completed. As evidenced by its chassis number CSX, this is the version for the United States. On February 8, 1966, the car was sold to Hayward Motors in California. It was then black in colour. The car moved to Colorado sometime later, when it was found by an insurance company and it was sold to a certain George Bell, from Hayato, California. It then changed hands several times, but always in the U.S.: Rick Burgay, Sacramento, then Leo Gephart, of Englewood in 1973, then to Shinkay Jerome, of Janesville in 1975, to Larry Megibow, Wayne in 1977 and then Fred Freer, of
