The Dodge Viper was first shown in 1989 at Detroit, no need to say that the concept was largely inspired even in its the name by the mythical AC Cobra. The street car was a big succes in USA but the idea to derivate a race car came from France, initiated by “Rent A Car Racing Team”. Two RT/10 Roadster were quickly prepared and entered at the 24 hours of Le Mans 1994, one the number 40 finished 12th, not too bad for a serial car. Then Hugues de Chaunac, owner of the Oreca race team decided Chrysler to finance the building of a real GT2 race car developped around the new GTS coupe. After difficult debuts in 1996 the car was now pretty quick and won its first races in 1998, in 1999 it won both FIA GT and ALMS GT2 Championships. The 2000 season will remain in all memories as Oreca won GT2 class at Le Mans, Sebring and finished first overall at Daytona 24 hours beating the prototypes. From 2001 the results were obtained by private teams, many class wins in Europe including two times SPA 24 Hours and in USA. During this period Oreca’s Vipers wrote some of the nicest pages of the GT racing history.
