Gooding & Co., The Amelia Island Auction, 9 March 2012: Preview

1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL 'Gullwing': $700,000 - 900,000

David Gooding and his team have assembled a simply stunning catalogue of predominantly European sports cars for their forthcoming Amelia Island sale.

The Drendel Family Porsche Collection entries have already been examined elsewhere on Classic Driver but, in addition to the 18 Drendel racing Porsches, there are many more highly desirable examples of the famous Stuttgart marque.

For example, a 1955 550/1500 RS Spyder ($2,200,000 - 2,600,000), or the period colour (Sepia Brown) 1970 911 2.2 S ($110,000 - 140,000) and the Light Yellow/green script 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7, for $300,000 - 375,000.

At its recent Arizona sale, Gooding sold a Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS Spider for $880,000. At Amelia, another example is catalogued. Of a slightly more sober hue (red vs. lime green – and not its original colour), the 1969 car is estimated at $550,000 - 700,000. Other Italian exotics include a 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupé ($1,300,000 - 1,600,000), a $275,000 - 350,000, 1957 Lancia Aurelia B24S Convertible and straight from everyone’s ‘must have one of those’ list, the 1953 Fiat 8V Coupé by Zagato, at $750,000 - 900,000.

There is some good stuff, isn’t there... albeit at the strongest of prices. And in this category lie the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 ($750,000 - 850,000 and lovely, LHD/factory air-conditioning/original Silver Birch spec) and the 1962 Lotus Elite Super 95, a rare, LHD example with ZF 'box estimated at $100,000 - 130,000.

In this company, $1,000,000 - 1,400,000 for the former Ferrari Club of America Platinum Award and Concours-winning 1971 Ferrari GTB/4 'Daytona' Spider looks a snip. (Although, had it been in its original Marrone Colorado rather than ‘resale red’, we’d have expected it to be valued higher.)

Other cars of note include the ‘Car of Tomorrow’ 1948 Tucker 48 ($950,000 - 1,300,000), the 1928 Bentley 4.5 Litre Blower ($600,000 - 800,000) and the $150,000 - 180,000, 1953 Allard K3 Roadster.

With top-end auctions riding on the crest of a wave at the moment, it will be interesting to see which car tops the results. From the estimates, nothing should touch the 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am car ($3,250,000 - 4,000,000). I just can’t help thinking that this has got too much of the “what would I do with it?” about it, though. Another Drendel car, the ex-Martini Racing, works 1976 Porsche 935/76, at $1,700,000 - 2,000,000, is more likely to be something which lends itself to hiring a track, just firing it up and having some fun.
