| Vehicle DescriptionFirst registered in November 1935, WS 6012 started life as a Riley Saloon. The early history of the car is unknown although there is the original post war buff registration document with the car. This charts ownership from 1957 through to the late 1960s when it was acquired by historic racer John Gray. Determined to produce one of the most attractive Riley Special's ever, John Gray based the shape of WS 6012 on Raymond Mays’ famous, ‘White Riley’. Barry Gillies, the former US Government atomic research engineer and respected vintage car restorer was entrusted by John Gray to mechanically build the Special and it took a steady progress until completion in 1985. Once ready, it entered the realms of VSCC racing and was extremely well received both in terms of its finish and fine looks! The late-Bentley Club Secretary and race driver, Ann Shoosmith had often admired the car at VSCC events also. Ann was looking to purchase an upgrade for her son Steven (from the Austin 7 he was then driving). Eventually, John Gray agreed to sell the Special to Ann in 1986 and in turn it was given to her extremely grateful son Steven. Ann spearheaded subsequent development and improved the car gradually with assistance from her trusted Bentley mechanic, Tim Abbott Engineering Ltd of Northampton. Of note the brakes were changed at this point and more substantial anti-tramp cables were fitted. Then enjoyed and campaigned by Steven Shoosmith for nearly two decades, WS 6012 passed to its current owner in 2004, from whom it is reluctantly offered for sale. A great all-rounder, WS 6012 not only sounds the part but has performance to match also and the Wilson Pre-Selector transmission further adds to driving enjoyment. The history file contains many invoices and schedule of works completed by Tim Abbott Engineering from April 1986 to November 2000 and thereafter by Keith Pointing, the renowned Riley Specialist of Rochford, Essex. Being a fun and exhilarating drive, WS 6012 is the perfect candidate for highly competitive VSCC track racing and hill climbs. It is offered with current UK V5 registration, aforementioned buff logbook and VSCC Eligibility document and welcome to inspection.
