We have for sale a most interesting and original Morgan 2-seat Plus 4 Super Sport that is fully documented with the original Morgan Car Company Build sheet.
This Morgan Plus 4 car was supplied new to a US Morgan distributor. It comes with the Triumph TR4 engine specially modified by Lawrence Tune, with 2 twin choke Weber carburettors, specially modified cylinder head and correct twin tubular exhaust manifolds. In Brunswick green, with biscuit leather upholstery, it is in excellent general condition, and now comes with the benefit of a top class wings off and glass out respray.
Believed to be one of around 100 original Morgan Plus 4s’ so modified to full Super Sports. These cars were capable of speeds up to 120 mph, making them potent sports cars with real competition potential. The Plus 4 Morgan was a distinct model in its own right and produced by Morgan as generally 2-seater sports cars. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s, these cars generally came with the Triumph TR engine and gearbox. In 1960, Morgan modified a few of these cars to compete in the Le Mans races and other similar endurance events, teaming up with Lawrence Tune to uprate the engine. More often than not class winners, the factory cars soon created a demand to modify standard production Plus 4 cars for customer use and this car is believed to be one of around 100 original cars so modified with the same engine modifications.
Morgans, even to the present day come with a separate ladder chassis and the Morgan distinctive sliding pillar front suspension. The Body is constructed around a wooden frame with steel and aluminium panels and wings and all follow a traditional Morgan design, with side opening bonnet and separate front and rear wings, 2 or 4 seat Tourer with a slab petrol tank at the rear.
This particular car was supplied new to a US distributor as an original LHD car in 1961 and has just been acquired for sale from a Californian car collector. Needing little attention, it is an exceptional example. It is extremely lively and a car of real character.
Genuine Super Sports Plus 4 Morgans are sought after and command a strong following. An opportunity to buy such an example comes by rarely, these cars being cherished, few in number and change ownership very infrequently. Our car comes with full weather equipment.
