Limited edition watches are produced to commemorate many things: company anniversaries, historic events, famous people but rarely a road, but the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore 'Montauk Highway' Limited Edition does just that.
Released in 2009 in a run of just 300 pieces, this watch is a tribute to the road that runs from the New York borough of Queens (where it is now renamed Merrick Boulevard) across Long Island out to the Montauk Point State Park.
To New Yorkers, this is so much more than a road; it is the promise of weekend breaks in the Hamptons, sand, sea and open skies. Immortalised in Paul Simon's song 'Dazzling Blue' this road is the stuff of the office worker's escapist reverie.
Audemars Piguet has captured this spirit in the piercing blue of the inner bezel set against the natural earth tones of the sub-dials and strap. Naturally, the prestige of the brand is perfectly aligned with the upmarket residents of Sagaponack and its surrounding area.
To maintain a local emphasis this watch was sold only in Audemars Piquet's boutiques in New York and Bal Harbour along with the two branches of London Jewellers on Long Island itself.
