| When announced in 1952, the Bentley R-Type Continental was the fastest four-seater in the world, with a top speed of 120mph. It was also the most expensive production car, which helps to explain why only 208 were built. It was appointed to a degree of luxury which no other manufacturer could match and most were clothed with the stunningly beautiful fastback body by H.J. Mulliner. In 1952, when many commodities were still rationed in Britain, it caused a sensation and gave a degree of elegance and performance then unheard of. It also reinforced Bentley's reputation as a sporting car manufacturer distinguishing itself from its more formal stable mate Rolls Royce. This Continental was supplied new in June 1954 to a Mr E Parry of Parry Amalgamations in Birmingham though judging from the factory work instructions it was originally intended for Stanley William Bailey Hailwood, the father of legendary racer Mike Hailwood, a multi millionaire motorcycle dealer and racer of some note himself. Specified in Circassian Blue, BC75C was fitted with Renillum style seating with a border around the top and outside of each squab and cushion to hold the occupant firmly in the seat, and fluted centre panels to give full support to the body. Also specified were a synchromesh gearbox and two fog lamps in place of the standard single centre mounted lamp. Factory records show that in late 1955, BC75C was bought by Mr R. G. Hawkins of Bristol who kept the Bentley for a further 6 years before, in 1962, it was sold to an R. S. Mead of Maidenhead. In 1966 A. R. Goring of Henley on Thames became the fourth owner of the R-Type. By 1981 ownership had passed to a titled gentleman from Gloucestershire from whom the current owner purchased the car in 2005. While in the current owner's care the Bentley has been subjected to a comprehensive body-off restoration with the woodwork restored by a retired Bentley craftsman using original materials. The body restoration included the fitment of a revised locking mechanism for the rear wheel spats to ease removal and installation. Mechanically the Bentley was overhauled and suspension was upgraded with a handling kit and rear anti-roll bar. Further detail finishing was completed by noted specialists Calvert-Wells & Company at a cost in excess of £27,000. The end result is arguably the best R-Type Continental on the market. The Navy Blue paint is spotless and the burgundy leather interior is soft, comfortable and epitomises 1950's luxury and glamour. Modern amenities include a tastefully concealed radio. With an MoT certificate valid until August 2012, this remarkable Bentley is now ready to be enjoyed and savoured.
