| Ferrari's 201mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40 Pininfarina produced an era defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40¡¯s were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione's and the road 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floorpan, The 2936cc motor produces approximately 500bhp at 7000rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1bar of boost - at 1202kg the F40 had a and still has a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary. Whilst the GTO had pioneered the use of composite panels, the F40 was the first whose bodywork was constructed entirely from such materials. Comprising eleven panels made from Nomex, Kevlar and Carbon composite with a heavily ventilated Plexiglas rear windscreen. Sliding Lexan windows were fitted to the first 50 cars, these getting replaced by wind-ups thereafter. The F40 was a landmark not just on account of its crushing performance and stunning looks, but it was fittingly the last ever car presented by Enzo Ferrari, this taking place at Maranello in June 1987, 14 months before the great man¡¯s death. From 1991 onwards cars were fitted with catalytic convertors to meet ever tightening legislation and at this time adjustable suspension became an option. Production was discontinued in 1992 after 1311 examples had been completed in five years (600 or so being bound for the USA and being noticeably different to their lighter and faster European cousins), the F40 was only ever available from Ferrari in left-hand drive and presented in Rosso Corsa. (Approximately 7 examples were converted to RHD for the Sultan of Brunei) In 1993 Michelotto prepared seven F40 GT¡¯s for an endurance racing scene that was recovering from years in the doldrums. Several more-or-less standard F40¡äs had already contested 1992¡äs inaugural Italian GT Championship, the regulations stipulating no modifications to the engine, suspension or brakes, those few changes that were permitted including fitting a safety rollcage and slick tyres. For 1993, the rules allowed considerably more development and Michelotto were able to fit a number of LM-derived parts. One car that had been used during the 1992 championship (74047) was modified over the winter of 1992/¡¯93 while six more GT¡¯s were freshly built from road cars. Set up alterations included new suspension wishbones, spring and damper units, larger anti-roll bars, four-pot Brembo brakes and wider one-piece OZ wheels, all of which were sourced from the F40 LM. Output jumped to 560bhp, the turbo pressure having risen by 0.1 bar while a more efficient competition exhaust system was also fitted. A number of lighter and stronger LM body parts were used although the stock F40 nose with its retractable headlights and distinctive supplementary clusters was retained. This F40, chassis 94030, was delivered in September 1992 to its first owner by the Italian dealership Ineco S.R.L.. The car is fitted with Non adjustable ride height suspension and was originally equipped with a Catalytic Converter. Interestingly for a Cat car the it has the addition of very rare but most sought after Sliding Perspex windows ¨C the collector¡¯s preference. This car was updated in period with many Michelotto parts to GT spec alongside its official GT cousins. However, it never raced or took part in the GT championships. These modifications include; lightweight front and rear clam shells, OZ LM wheels, LM Brembo brakes, adjustable suspension with fully adjustable shock absorbers with remote reservoirs, revised spring rates, no catalytic convertors, a free flowing sports exhaust, adjusted boost management and an upgraded oil filtration system. The car is accompanied by an excellent service history having received a major cambelt service and new tyres in 2010 at DK Engineering. It is accompanied by tools and books. Today 94030 has covered an indicated 17,350 kms from new, is UK registered and available to view immediately.
